Falkirk Council has successfully completed 11 projects funded by the Scottish Government's Nature Restoration Fund (NRF). The £348,000 investment has been used to restore nature, enhance nature networks, and improve biodiversity across the area.
Key projects include:
• Spaces for Nature & Nature Networks: This initiative, delivered in partnership with Greenspace Scotland, has connected urban green spaces to create a nature-friendly network. Fourteen sites have been enhanced with wildflowers, trees, and other plants to support local wildlife. Community activities have also been organized to educate residents about sustainable practices.
• Climate Forth: Rannoch Park: Rannoch Park is undergoing a significant transformation, with the first phase focusing on creating wetlands, woodlands, and meadows filled with nectar-rich plants. New seating areas and a community orchard have also been added, enhancing the park's appeal to both wildlife and local residents.
• Invasive Species Control: The council has addressed the issue of invasive species at Avonglen Wildlife Site and Bantaskine Estate. By removing non-native plants, the council has restored natural woodland habitats, improving biodiversity and protecting the local environment.
These projects demonstrate Falkirk Council's commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being. By investing in nature restoration, the council aims to create a greener, healthier, and more biodiverse future for the region.
Falkirk Council has partnered with groups like Greenspace Scotland and the Green Action Trust, along with local volunteers, to make these projects a reality. Community involvement is key to restoring habitats and creating a healthier environment for everyone.
Councillor Paul Garner, Deputy Leader of Falkirk Council, said: "Our community is at the heart of these Nature Restoration Fund projects. With the help of local volunteers and partners, we’re building green spaces that support our wildlife and enhance the lives of residents."
These projects are part of Falkirk Council’s larger effort to protect the environment, enhance biodiversity and fight climate change. By creating habitats and removing harmful species, the council is helping to create a healthier, greener future for the area.
