Argyll and Bute Council has commissioned a team of consultants to develop a detailed design for a new route between Lochgilphead Front Green and the Crinan Canal. This initiative aims to improve safety and encourage more people to choose walking and cycling as their primary mode of transport.
The project builds upon the successful completion of stages one and two of the active travel project, which concluded in May 2024. The council has been working closely with Sustrans, Transport Scotland, and local residents to identify and implement improvements to pedestrian and cycle paths along the route.
The new route will prioritise existing road space, creating safer and more accessible paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users. This approach aligns with the Scottish Government's movement hierarchy, which promotes sustainable travel and reduces reliance on cars.
By investing in active travel infrastructure, Argyll and Bute Council is demonstrating its commitment to creating healthier, more sustainable communities. This project will not only enhance the quality of life for local residents but also contribute to the overall environmental goals of the region.
Councillor John Armour, the council's Policy Lead for Roads and Transport, said: "We are committed to improving accessibility for everyone and addressing the challenges of climate change through sustainable travel options. The proposed route between Lochgilphead Front Green and the Crinan Canal offers a safe alternative to car travel and takes in the stunning scenery that we have on our doorstep. Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent consultations – your feedback has been paramount in reaching this next stage."
The project is funded by the Places for Everyone programme, administered by Sustrans.
