Montrose Coastal Erosion Project Underway

Immediate work has commenced as part of the wider Montrose Coastal Erosion Project. In October, the reprofiling of the existing rock armour at the 2nd tee of the Montrose Golf Links was carried out. This work was necessary due to the rock armour being overtopped by waves and sinking below beach level, compromising its protective function.

The project, funded by the Montrose Common Good Fund and the golf club, aims to safeguard the coastline from further erosion. While initial plans to construct two rock groynes were scheduled for this year, design requirements, consenting processes, and winter construction constraints have led to a revised timeline. The groyne construction is now planned for 2025.


To address immediate concerns, shorter-term measures will be implemented in November, focusing on vulnerable areas of the dunes. Large, engineered sandbags will be used to infill low points and prevent further erosion until the long-term solutions can be implemented.

The development of a comprehensive Business Case to secure funding for the project is underway and expected to be finalised in early 2025. A new Digital Elevation Model, based on recent topographical data, will aid in accurately assessing erosion rates and inform future planning decisions.
