An estimated 150 new homes could be developed in Stirling city centre after an eight-hectare site was agreed to be disposed of by Stirling Council.
The site includes land and assets in and around Old Viewforth (excluding the Old Viewforth building but including Langgarth House which was subject to a fire on 30 March 2024), as well as Burghmuir Road, Linden Avenue car park and the former Wellgreen Care Home.
Any proposals for development of the site must do so guided by the new framework and planning brief for Viewforth and Burghmuir previously approved by the Council.
The document, which takes account of the latest planning principles and climate and environmental considerations, outlines the vision for the area and how developments can make use of existing buildings and infrastructure, deliver new homes, enhance greenspaces and biodiversity and improve connectivity within Stirling.
"This is a major milestone in the redevelopment of a key part of Stirling city centre that has the potential to deliver high-quality new homes and a wide range of economic, social and environmental benefits," said Stirling Council Leader, Cllr Margaret Brisley.
"A comprehensive planning framework, which has been informed by feedback from residents and local communities, will ensure the history, heritage and natural landscape of the site are considered for any future developments.
"I look forward to seeing the proposals for the creation of a new vibrant and sustainable community that is better integrated into the city centre and enhances the appearance of the area."
A final position on the status of the property at point of sale will be confirmed through consultation with both conservation and insurance specialists.
Old Viewforth will be retained for corporate and civic accommodation as part of the council's corporate accommodation strategy.
