Scalloway Harbour Redevelopment Plans Proposed

Construction News Image
Shetland Islands Council is seeking input from harbour users, stakeholders, and the community on potential redevelopment plans for Scalloway Harbour.

In September 2023, council members reviewed an initial report exploring various options for the harbour's future. The existing harbour, serving the aquaculture, fishing, offshore, cruise, and recreational sectors, requires a replacement for the West Pier and potential extension. Additionally, the harbour's layout could be improved to attract new businesses, such as by increasing water depth for larger vessels and offering shore storage and boat repair services.

Over the coming weeks, consultation meetings will be held with harbour users and stakeholders representing the fishing, aquaculture, renewables, engineering, and freight industries. A public drop-in session will also take place on Wednesday, October 30th, from 3 PM to 6 PM at Scalloway Youth Centre, allowing the public to view options, ask questions, and provide feedback.

Shetland Islands Council is partnering with engineering consultants Arch Henderson, specialising in port infrastructure planning and design, to develop potential layouts and future options for the harbour. Following the consultation process, any emerging proposals will be considered for further development and presented to council members for decision-making.

Councillor Robert Thomson, Chair of the Council's Harbour Board said: "Scalloway Harbour provides significant opportunities to the local economy with a wide range of marine-related industries all using the harbour area regularly. We're keen to hear from anyone with views on the possible development options and understand how any new development might impact upon the village and local area."
