SSEN Transmission has initiated early engagement with communities in Shetland ahead of a proposed second High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link to the Scottish mainland.
The project, which is still in its early stages, aims to address the increasing demand for renewable energy transmission capacity in the region. The need for a second HVDC link was identified by the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) and has been provisionally approved by Ofgem.
The proposed link will have a capacity of 1.8GW, significantly exceeding the capacity of the existing Shetland HVDC Link. This additional capacity is essential for connecting and transmitting renewable energy generated from three planned offshore wind farms east of Shetland.
SSEN Transmission is currently working on the initial site-selection process to identify potential locations for the onshore infrastructure, which is expected to include a new HVDC converter station, AC substation, and a connection to the existing substation at Kergord.
The project is expected to enhance Shetland's future security of supply and support the integration of renewable energy into the Scottish power grid.
SSEN Transmission's Community Liaison Manager Thea Groat said: "The proposed second Shetland HVDC Link remains in the very early stages of development and will be subject to extensive and meaningful formal consultation with local communities and wider stakeholders.
"To help inform the early development of these projects, we are eager to hear from communities across Shetland to help take on board initial thoughts, feedback and key local knowledge to help shape our proposals in these crucial early phases.
"We've started our initial engagement with Shetland Islands Council and community councils in Shetland and look forward to meeting with further groups to share our initial plans and take on board any views they have.
"These projects are crucial in the fight against climate change, to enhance local and national energy security and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and will play a major role in helping to secure power for current and future generations.
"They will also unlock significant economic benefits, supporting local business and jobs, where we are committed to build on the positive economic impacts of the first Shetland HVDC link and deliver a lasting legacy for current and future generations."
