Network Rail Completes Bridge Demolitions On East Kilbride Line

Construction News Image
Network Rail has successfully demolished two bridges along the East Kilbride line as part of a major £140 million improvement project. The work, completed on Tuesday, October 1st, involved the removal of bridges at Thornliebank Road and Westerton Lane.

The demolition of these structures is a significant step towards the electrification of the East Kilbride line. The new bridges will provide the necessary clearance for the installation of overhead line equipment, enabling electric trains to operate on the route.

In addition to the bridge demolitions, Network Rail has also completed other important phases of the project. A new accessible footbridge was installed at the new Hairmyres station, and drainage work has been carried out between Hairmyres and East Kilbride stations.

To further enhance service reliability, a £5 million track renewal project has commenced at Busby Junction, where the East Kilbride and Barrhead lines intersect.

These improvements are expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience and provide a more efficient and reliable service for commuters traveling on the East Kilbride line.

Paul Reilly, senior programme manager, Network Rail, said: "We're really pleased to have been able to complete these critical elements of the East Kilbride enhancement project.

"These works are designed to enhance and improve the infrastructure for our passengers and freight customers for years to come.

"We appreciate that there's never a great time to close lines and our thanks go to passengers and the wider community for their patience over the weekend."
