Falkirk Council Completes Grandsable Improvement Works

Construction News Image
Falkirk Council has announced the completion of Grandsable improvement works, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of the A9 corridor.

Funded through the Council's Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) scheme - which uses revenue generated from commercial development to fund road improvements - the £1m project has transformed the junction, providing safer and more efficient travel for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The new road layout and upgraded footpaths at Grandsable further enhances safety and connectivity in the area and builds on the improvements made at the M9 Junction 5 Cadgers Brae Interchange, where intelligent traffic lights, new footpaths and cycle crossing facilities have already been installed.

Carried out on behalf of Falkirk Council by Hillhouse Quarry Group Ltd, the work at Grandsable took just over five months to complete and includes:

• Permanent traffic signals: Installed at the junction of the A9/Grandsable Road, the lights will help regulate traffic flow and provide controlled pedestrian crossing points.

• New traffic signage, road markings and road lighting: Enhancing visibility and safety for all road users.

• Improved footpaths: Once work is completed by Scottish Water, the path on the north will be dual use, catering for both pedestrians and cyclists. The path will seamlessly join with those laid at Cadgers Brae.

• Planting native trees, hedgerows and wildflower grass: Improving the local environment and biodiversity.

The changes to Grandsable are part of a broader strategy to improve infrastructure along the A9 corridor and support businesses by ensuring controlled traffic flows and enhanced accessibility. The work also provides people with safe active travel routes that link Mumrills Road and the A9 underpass with Rannoch Park and beyond.

Cllr Paul Garner, Deputy Leader of Falkirk Council and spokesperson for Economic Development, said: "The improvements made to the junction of the A9/Grandsable Road, along with the earlier improvements made at the M9 Junction 5 Cadgers Brae Interchange, highlight our commitment to creating safer and more efficient infrastructure for our community and local businesses. These enhancements not only improve traffic flow but also increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists navigating this busy and important gateway into our area."

Of the two remaining projects in the council's TIF programme, design work on the Laurieston Road/Icehouse Brae Road (North) upgrading is progressing at pace. The transformation of the A9/A904 around Westfield scheduled for completion in early 2027.
