Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and Keltbray have announced the launch of a new Regional LCD Headquarters in Andover, providing a central hub for teams dedicated to upgrading and enhancing SSEN's network and power a net zero future.
Attendees experienced first-hand the advanced plant machinery that will drive significant network improvements in the region, while interactive displays and discussions about early careers in STEM ignited curiosity and enthusiasm among visitors. The event also highlighted SSEN and Keltbray's commitment to community engagement, by announcing Unity as the local charity that will receive support over the coming year.
Around 150 people attended, including students who had the unique opportunity to engage with STEM ambassadors, participate in exciting competitions, and safely explore plant machinery. Experts from SSEN and Keltbray shared their vision for a sustainable future, detailing how their work benefits local communities, including initiatives for DSO and Vulnerable Customers.
Andy Huthwaite, Director of Large Capital Delivery for SSEN, said: "The opening of our joint Large Capital Delivery Headquarters in Andover, with our Partners Keltbray, marks a significant step forward in our commitment to modernising the network and supporting the transition to a net zero future in this region. This complements our existing Operational depot that has been at the heart of the community for around 30 years, ensuring the local electricity network is reliable and safe.
"I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the local community and look forward to seeing this collaboration bring substantial investment to the region. This depot will be at the heart of our efforts to enhance infrastructure resilience and capacity, ensuring we meet the evolving needs of our customers and communities."
Large Capital Delivery encompasses a range of projects aimed at improving network capacity and resilience, from constructing new substations to laying new cables. These efforts are crucial in meeting the demands of a greener future and mitigating the impacts of adverse weather events. In November 2023, SSEN appointed Keltbray as the framework partner for its Western region, accelerating large capital projects worth over £1 billion by 2028.
Mike Snee, Managing Director of Keltbray Energy, added: "We are thrilled to work with SSEN on this crucial initiative. Beyond our technical efforts, we are dedicated to becoming an integral part of the Andover community, fostering relationships with local businesses, supporting schools, and creating social value that extends far beyond our depot walls. We are particularly excited to support Unity in the crucial work they deliver for the community."
Unity's Chief Executive, Terry Bishop said: "We are delighted to have been invited to participate in the opening of the SSEN and Keltbray depot in Andover and hope it is a huge success. Unity is looking forward to working in partnership with SSEN and Keltbray in support of the local community in the future and are grateful to have had the opportunity to join them on this occasion."
This event marks the first of many community-focused initiatives from SSEN and Keltbray. By engaging with local businesses, supporting educational institutions, and creating meaningful social value, both organisations are committed to fostering a collaborative and sustainable future for Andover and beyond.
