The public's views are sought on proposals for a sustainable residential-led development at Maybury Quarter Edinburgh which is the site of the former Saica packaging facility in West Edinburgh.
Promoted by Summix Capital, regeneration specialists, Maybury Quarter Edinburgh presents an excellent opportunity to revitalize the once-industrial site on Turnhouse Road, spanning 15.5 acres (6.3 hectares).
The leading low carbon neighbourhood aims to offer a blend of functions, including housing, hotel, commercial, and retail facilities. This brownfield plot is designated in the Council’s Proposed City Plan 2030 for redevelopment with a residential focus.
The first public consultation event will be held on 27 March 2024 at Delta Hotels by Marriott between 2.00pm and 7.00pm and a second event will be held on 22 May 2024 at the same venue and time, presenting updated proposals which will include appropriate feedback and comments from the first event and other stakeholder engagement.
The plans for Maybury Quarter will aim to achieve a blend of facilities that will support health, well-being, and sustainable living practices, all while promoting a vibrant sense of locality and community spirit.
It will aim to deliver:
• 1000 homes
• Hotel – 120-150 rooms
• Retail/potential local centre – 30,000 sq. ft. overall
• Extensive green spaces will be created, with high-quality public realm and access arrangements
The housing plans will feature a mix of affordable housing, catering to various tenures, to tackle the city's widely acknowledged housing crisis. This will include the provision of accessible family residences alongside Build to Rent (BTR) accommodation, designed specifically for rental purposes rather than sale. An application for detailed planning permission to the City of Edinburgh Council is expected to be submitted by late 2024.
Stuart Black, Development Director for Summix Capital, said:
"We are delighted to give the community the chance to view and feedback on our proposals for Maybury Quarter Edinburgh, which provides a unique opportunity to redevelop one of the last major pieces of brownfield land in the city into a brand-new, sustainable mixed-use community.
"The site's regeneration has the potential to provide much-needed homes, employment and investment, helping to address the current housing emergency, and taking advantage of and strengthening already excellent public transport links by train, tram, bus and cycle. Maybury Quarter must be one of the most exciting and best-connected development sites in Scotland."
