I & H Brown Appointed For New Substation Construction Works

I & H Brown has been appointed by SP Energy Networks for the construction of a new substation platform adjacent to the existing Eccles Substation located near Coldstream in The Borders.

Works include the setting-up of permanent welfare cabins, site clearance and formation of an access road to the excavation platform.

Included in these works will be excavation of 19,000m3 of topsoil, 78,000m3 of subsoil with 72,500m3 of this to be taken off site. Excavation and refilling of 8,500m3 of fill at the cut fill line, 36,000m3 of imported fill of various stone types and 97,000m2 of geotextile.

Additionally, there will also be over 2,200m of drainage with a total of 82 manholes and 120m of culverts to be constructed. 140m2 of permanent access road are required to be constructed to build into the platform. Finally, 750m of temporary heras fencing will be required and 915m of permanent 3m high palisade fencing will also be installed around the site.

The Eccles substation is recognised as a nationally important facility, forming a key part of the electricity network, enabling cross-borders electricity transmission. This major project will provide key infrastructure which supports the transition towards net zero targets and meets demands of the grid network.
