Network Rail Engineers Prepare Dumfries Improvement Works

Construction News Image
Network Rail has announced that Dumfries station footbridge will permanently close after the last train through the station on Friday 15 December, to allow for the start of replacement works.

The footbridge, which connects platforms one and two at the station, will be taken out of use as engineers prepare for its removal on Saturday 16 December.

It's all part of the project to provide step-free access at the station, making it easier for those with limited mobility or travelling with children, luggage or cycles to move between the platforms.

Train services will continue to operate as normal during the work and a diversion route along St Mary Street will be in operation to take passengers between the platforms at this time. Passengers should leave additional time for their journey to reflect this.

Platform two's car park will be closed from Wednesday, December 13 to enable preparatory work ahead of the removal of the bridge on Saturday night before it re-opens again on Monday, December 18.

Amanda Naughton, Network Rail's project manager for the Dumfries Access for All project said: "We need to close the footbridge at Dumfries to allow us to safely carry out the next phase of work to deliver the new bridge in the station.

"The closure of the bridge is permanent and is unavoidable to allow us to complete our work on the new bridge - which is due to open in Summer 2024.

"We understand that having to take a longer route between the platforms is inconvenient and we would like to thank the local people for their patience and understanding as we carry out this work."
