Seaway7 has been awarded the prestigious Fleming Award of the British Geotechnical Association (BGA), for the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm project, a joint venture partnership between SSE Renewables and TotalEnergies.

The Fleming Award is awarded annually by the BGA to recognise excellence in project teams in the practical application of geotechnics in a project. The award is presented to the Project Team which most demonstrates excellence in geotechnical design & construction with an emphasis on teamwork across the different disciplines involved in the project and innovation.

Seaway7 was up against strong competition to claim the prestigious award with finalists Hinkley Point C Tunnel Shaft Connections and 76 Southbank Foundation re-use scheme also in the running.  It's no doubt a huge honour for the project to join such a highly esteemed list of winners from over the years.

The Seagreen project team, led by Project Director, John Hill and supported by Jon Drummond, Foundation Package Manager undertook the early design work with Ramboll. The design work was then novated to Seaway7 who were the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) contractor for foundations and cables on the project.

John Hill, Seagreen Project Director said: "We are delighted to see Seaway7 win this fantastic award. Using suction caissons as a foundation solution in such a wide range of complex geotechnical conditions and applying this into an offshore wind project at scale is a significant advance. It's great to see this is now being followed by other major projects across the world."

Dr Nawras Hamdan, Specialist Geotechnical Engineer, and Mark MacBeath, Project Engineering Manager, had the honour of presenting at Institution of Civil Engineers in London, on the 5th of December alongside Dr Trevon Joseph and Peter Loizides of Ramboll, the detailed design contractor for the project. The project team gave an overview of the Seagreen project and some of the geotechnical challenges encountered during the design and installation of the jacket foundations.

Dr Nawras Hamden said: "Seagreen is the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, with very challenging ground conditions. I am proud to have been part of the project team which overcame these challenges by deploying suction caisson technology at a scale never seen before and applying ground breaking installation refusal techniques with excellent innovative engineering work. I am delighted to have been able to represent the Seaway7 project team at the awards together with Mark MacBeath. We presented a small part of the project and there are many other colleagues who significantly contributed the success of the project."

The prize money of £1,000, donated by Event Sponsor Cementation Skanska, will be donated to OffshoreWind4Kids to inspire the future generation of offshore wind engineers and suction caisson experts!
