RenewableUK (RUK) has named Seagreen the Offshore Wind Project of the Year at this year's Global Offshore Wind Awards.
Seagreen, a joint venture between SSE Renewables and its partner TotalEnergies, beat stiff competition to claim the prestigious award. The expert panel of judges including senior industry and government figures from a diverse range of backgrounds said Seagreen, which is now 100% complete, displayed a notable Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) record with 6-million man-hours and zero lost time incidents. The judging panel also said Seagreen stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders. Dogger Bank Wind Farm, the SSE Renewables-Equinor- Vårgrønn joint venture, was named Runner Up in the category.
Situated 27km off the Angus coast in the North Sea's Firth of Forth, Seagreen is now Scotland's largest wind farm as well as the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, with its deepest foundation installed at a record 58.7 metres below sea level^. The 1.1GW project has the capacity to generate enough renewable electricity to power almost 1.6 million homes annually, equivalent to two-thirds of all Scottish homes*, and to displace over 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from electricity generated by fossil fuels every year.
John Casserly, Commercial Director for Renewables Major Projects at SSE Renewables, said: "I was very honored to accept the Offshore Wind Project of the Year Award on behalf of Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm at the RenewableUK Global Offshore Wind Awards. The award is industry recognition and testament to everyone involved in the project team from SSE Renewables, our partners TotalEnergies, our main contractors Vestas, Seaway7, Nexans, Petrofac and all our other suppliers, external professionals and advisors. We look forward to the safe operation and maintenance of this groundbreaking project for many years to come, providing clean, sustainable renewable power for almost 1.6 million homes annually."
RenewableUK's Global Offshore Wind Awards showcases the very best of the UK's offshore wind sector, with awards presented to recognise excellence across key aspects of the industry, including People, Skills, Health and Safety, Innovation and Excellence, and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). The glittering annual awards ceremony is headline sponsored by SSE Renewables, with the ceremony hosted by stand-up comedian, television presenter, and political commentator Nish Kumar.
As well as being named runner-up in Offshore Wind Project of the Year, Dogger Bank Wind Farm was also nominated for Offshore Wind Gamechanger for its Unmanned High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Offshore Substation and Transmission Systems.
SSE Renewables' Ian Toothill was named Joint Runner Up in the Aspiring Leader Award category. Ian, who is Aviation Manager responsible for delivering defence, military and civilian air traffic control mitigations on projects such as Seagreen, Beatrice, Berwick Bank, North Falls and Ossian, was nominated for balancing his professional workload with industry responsibilities such as RUK's Aviation Working Group, the Aviation Management Board at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and as SSE Director on the Aviation Investment Fund Company.
SSE Renewables presented awards in two sponsored categories. Alexandra Malone, Director of Corporate Affairs, presented the Supply Chain Innovation of the Year award to Shoreline Wind for introducing a whole new concept to the offshore wind supply chain.
Martha Selwyn, Social Impact lead at SSE Renewables, presented the Just Transition Champion Award to Ocean Winds, recognising initiatives to prioritise the well-being of workers and communities affected by the transition to offshore wind.
RenewableUK's Chief Executive Dan McGrail said: "Its been an honour to host the Global Offshore Wind Awards for a second year in a row. In the last twelve months the industry has grown significantly, breaking boundaries in innovation, collaboration and inclusivity".
"I'd like to congratulate all the winners, runners-up and nominees this year, as the bar was set exceptionally high, reflecting the enormous talent of all the entrants. They have demonstrated great leadership, constantly innovating and driving the industry forward through these challenging times to a more secure and prosperous net zero future."
