Clark Contracts are continuing to work on the transformation of The Briggait's Category A-listed Clydeside Market Halls on behalf of Wasps Studios.
The works, which commenced in July, will see the safeguarding of the roof of the 1899 and 1904 Market Halls, general repairs to ageing floors and walls, and the installation of new toilet facilities, a new entrance, a café, and a reception facing onto Clyde Street.
Due for completion in 2024, these enhancements will transform The Briggait, opening up the historic building to Clyde Street and the river for the first time in over 50 years. The 1904 Corner Block, the former fish market's main office on the corner of Merchant Lane and Clyde Street, will also be completely transformed to create a food and drink offering.
The halls will then be brought back to public use, allowing communities and visitors to take advantage of the full complement of spaces and activities in the building for many years to come. Wasps will expand its events and exhibitions capacity into these two halls from 2024 onwards, in turn providing more opportunities for the creative communities of Glasgow and beyond.
The project has received funding from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government's Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, Historic Environment Scotland, Glasgow City Heritage Trust, the Architectural Heritage Fund, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund and Avondale.
Michael Scanlan, Director at Clark Contracts, added: "We are excited to be delivering this refurbishment and restoration of the iconic Category A listed Briggait, to bring the building back to life. We look forward to working with Wasps, the design team, and wider community to deliver the project and provide valuable creative and community space."
