Aberdeen Council Considers Future Of City's Multi-Storey Buildings

Construction News Image
Aberdeen City Council has announced an extensive consultation seeking view on the future development of eight multi-storey buildings.

The consultation, which will be conducted both online and at a series of in drop-in sessions, will explore views on the quality of existing accommodation for residents and owners in:

• Marischal Court;

• Viriginia Court;

• Seamount Court;

• Porthill Court;

• Greig Court;

• Hutcheon Court;

• Thistle Court;

• Gilcomstoun Land.

Participants can select one of five proposed options which specify different levels of investment in the blocks.

Discussions with residents' groups during the consultation period will also be held, as well as drop-in sessions where residents and owners can discuss the options with representatives from Aberdeen City Council, The Tenant Participation Advisory Service Scotland (TPAS) and can get assistance to help complete the survey form. The consultation was produced in conjunction with TPAS, Shelter, and streets-UK.

Aberdeen City Council Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee convener Councillor Miranda Radley said: "Aberdeen City Council is carrying out a consultation with residents and owners in eight city centre multi-storeys as part of a full options appraisal for the future of the buildings.

"It is incredibly important for residents and owners to engage with the consultation either at one of the drop-in events or by completing the consultation online, as these are people's homes and everyone must have their say."

The Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee agreed in May 2023 the exercise should be carried out to ensure that the views of residents and owners in these multi-storeys on the economic, social, and environmental impact of the blocks be considered.

Councillors had noted that the blocks have deteriorated in line with their age and life expectancy, with some of the flats no longer meeting energy performance requirements.

The views and comments collected will be analysed and shared with residents and owners and will be included in a report back to the Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee.

The consultation is available via letters sent directly to residents and owners and is open until 10th November.
