New Aberdeenshire Primary School Development Progresses

Construction News Image
A new Aberdeenshire primary school development is set to progress after the council approved the merger of two local schools.

Aberdeenshire Council agreed to merge Fraserburgh North School and St Andrew's School once a new primary school is built within the grounds of Fraserburgh Academy, currently set to open in 2026 and accommodate up to 450 pupils.

The move follows many years of consultation and engagement with the community.

Aberdeenshire Council Provost Judy Whyte said: "I was pleased to see full council today agree to merge these two schools into a new, state of the art primary school building.

"The new school will significantly increase opportunities for our children and young people with access to modern, fit for purpose facilities and resources.

"As part of the project design process, pupils from both schools will continue to be consulted and involved in the development of the project.

"This will give them a great sense of pride in their environment, which I am sure will inspire them to even greater achievement and attainment."

Chair of the Education and Children's Services Committee Cllr David Keating added: "Today's decision takes us one step further along to building a new, modern school which will be a significant improvement to the two current schools.

"It will provide a modern and attractive learning environment, designed to meet the needs of the 21st century curriculum and its 21st century learners.

"The education benefits which will arise for young people have been clearly outlined to us and I am pleased to note that Education Scotland has also recognised these benefits.

"Today marks another milestone for our vision and aspiration for a new school in Fraserburgh and I am pleased that ongoing engagement with the community will continue during the design and build phase and I look forward to the new school opening."

The decision needs to be approved by Scottish Ministers before the council can begin implementation.

Members of the public can make representations to Scottish Ministers requesting that the decision be reviewed.

They can either email schoolclosure@gov.scot or write to The Scottish Government, School Infrastructure Unit, 2A (South), Victoria Quay, Edinburgh, EH6 6QQ.
