Scottish Water Progress Bridge Of Weir Flood Protection Works

Construction News Image
Scottish Water has reached a key stage in its ongoing million pound project to tackle sewer flooding in Bridge of Weir.

From Monday 9 October, engineers will begin work on a key phase of the scheme with the installation of upgraded pipework along a short section of Main Street. The works are expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water's corporate affairs regional manager in the west, said: "While the road will be closed to vehicles pedestrian access will be unaffected.

"It will still be possible to drive into the village, park and walk the short distance either side of the works to local shops, cafes and restaurants.

"The diversion in place – via Houston Road, Barrochan Road and Bridge of Weir Road – is to ensure the route can accommodate all vehicles including HGV's.

"It is really important that people remember they can still access everything the village has to offer."

The installation of the new, larger section of sewer was originally going to be carried out under a single lane closure to help minimise disruption to the community.

However, a significant number of uncharted services were found in exactly the location the project team planned to lay the new pipework. These were not found during site investigations carried out in 2021.

Georgina added: "The only safe way to complete this phase of the project is under a full road closure.

"We will continue to work with the community and stakeholders to minimise the amount of disruption these essential works will cause.

"Once completed the project will significantly reduce the risk of sewer flooding, bringing peace of mind to the village for many years to come."

The project is being delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance and is expected to be completed by December.
