Glasgow Housing Associations To Deliver New Social Homes

Construction News Image
Glasgow City Council has approved compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) for three flats in Ibrox and the off-market disposal of a derelict building in Laurieston.

The CPOs and off-market disposal will allow the council to progress plans for the development of new social housing.

The compulsory purchase of the flats, located at Harley Street, will enable the council to transfer their ownership to Elderpark Housing Association. The flats will be added to the city's social housing stock.

The other property, at 26-34 Bridge Street, had lain derelict since 2008 when the company that operated there was dissolved. The council took ownership of the building in 2017. It will not be transferred to New Gorbals Housing Association (NGHA).

NGHA has also acquired a former public house adjoining the Bridge Street building and is now considering development options for the site.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Neighbourhood Services and Assets at Glasgow City Council, said: "(The) decisions show our determination to use the powers at our disposal to bring new homes to the city, and we look forward to working with these housing associations to help deliver them. We have already used compulsory purchase orders in other parts of the city to bring such homes back into productive use, and we will continue to do so where appropriate."
