A major new affordable housing development has been secured for the site of the former Auchinairn Primary School, after East Dunbartonshire Council agreed the handover of the site to the Housing Service.
Council Leader Gordan Low explained: "At our Council meeting in June we agreed that rather than proceed to sell the former Auchinairn Primary school site we should transfer it to our Housing Revenue Account to be developed for much-needed affordable housing in the area.
"It is great news that we are now in the process of completing this transfer and will then look to undertake a feasibility study of the site to determine the number and type of affordable homes we can build.
"Whilst the site was originally to be sold for private development, reallocating it for Council development was the right decision for our local residents, particularly given the current economic landscape. This is consistent with the council's new strategic priorities and the approach taken at other vacant sites - just this year we have seen the welcome completion of new homes at the former Lairdsland Primary School and Tom Johnston House sites in Kirkintilloch.
"I look forward to updates to Council on the opportunities for the Auchinairn Primary School site, following the feasibility study, and to the delivery of further affordable homes in the area to meet our community needs."
Further updates on the progress of the transfer and development of the site will be reported to future Council meetings.
