Maxi Construction has continued its commitment to providing work placements, as Inveralmond Community High School student, Sonny McCann, completes a 4-week internship via Career Ready.
Contracts Manager, Brian Ward was paired with 17-year-old Sonn, due to his interest in a career within the construction industry. Brian mentored Sonny throughout the 2022-23 academic year and the 4-week internship came to an end last week. With his ambition to become a joiner, Sonny primarily spent time visiting our sites and shadowing site managers, operatives and tradesmen where he was able to gain experience learning about health and safety in construction and the collaboration between each of the trades.
Career Ready is a charity whose aim is to support secondary school pupils into employment by connecting schools with local employers to open up the world of work to young people.
Our Construction Director, Barry Simpson said: "We are delighted to be able to support programmes such as this. It can be a difficult time for teenagers with so much pressure from so many directions. Sometimes people need a wee nudge in their direction of choice and often some help in understanding what their choice means in terms of full time employment. We can provide that help and guidance and to that end I’ll be carrying the baton next year whilst mentoring another young person to assist with their career path in construction. We’ll explore various options and will provide valuable work experience on our live projects to give them confidence towards attaining their longer term goals."
Career Ready Regional Manager, Larissa Russell commented: "Sonny had a terrific internship at Maxi and experienced lots of site visits where he learned so much from the site managers. He gained so much confidence over the 4 weeks. This experience will be invaluable in Sonny’s chosen career as a joiner. On behalf of Career Ready we are grateful for the support Maxi gives to our programme. We couldn’t do this without the generosity of employers like you."
Maxi Construction began to support Career Ready in 2017 with a commitment to providing mentorship and paid internships to high school pupils with an interest in careers in construction. For more information on the Charity, please visit their website.
We wish Sonny well with his future endeavours as he undertakes a joinery apprenticeship whilst attending West Lothian College on a part-time basis.
