Network Rail Propose Accessibility Works At Dumfries Station

Construction News Image
Network Rail has submitted an application for Listed Building Consent for proposed accessibility works at Dumfries Station.

A planning application has been submitted to make Dumfries station more easily accessible for passengers. The application for listed building consent was made to Dumfries and Galloway Council and, if approved, will see the construction of a new footbridge with lifts to allow step-free access across both platforms.

Dumfries residents were given a first look at the plans during a community event in the town earlier this month, where it was revealed that the construction of the new bridge is expected to be completed in 2024.

Dumfries station is a category B listed building and the designs have been developed to be sympathetic to the look and feel of the historic character of the station.

Karen McChesney, Network Rail's town planning lead for the accessibility work at Dumfries station said: "The level of interest in the new bridge at Dumfries station was great. We are grateful that the people of Dumfries took the time to come and see what we are proposing.

"After working with our architects and local stakeholders, we're confident that we've made good choices on the proposed design that is being put forward for listed building consent.

"All being well, we are hopeful of progressing the work in Dumfries in autumn this year."

For anyone who was unable to make it along to the event but would still like to see the proposed design, they can find everything they need to know on Scotland's Railway website www.scotlandsrailway.com/projects by searching Dumfries Access for All.
