Balfour Beatty has been appointed as the engineering contractor for the Westfield A9/A904 Improvement project
The decision taken by councillors at a meeting of the Executive cements Falkirk Council's commitment to the ambitious project, the largest and most significant infrastructure investment under its innovative Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) programme.
The project has also secured £14 million from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund. This additional support makes clear the important role the project has in enhancing connectivity, accessibility, and economic growth in the area.
Once complete, the transformative project will improve active travel choices, unlock underdeveloped land and serve as a catalyst for the upcoming Gateway Development, which will feature a vibrant mix of retail, leisure, residential, and business facilities.
With the appointment now given the green light, council officers anticipate the 28-month construction contract will be signed in July. Work to widen carriageways, construct major crossing points, and implement vital road changes will then begin over the summer months.
Having already worked with Balfour Beatty during the early planning stages, the Council gained invaluable knowledge about construction approaches and a clearer understanding of project costs that will help ensure the effective and efficient delivery of the work.
Balfour Beatty has also collaborated with the Council’s Procurement Team and Employment Training Unit to help develop wider community benefits that will be realised once the construction contract is awarded.
By gaining approval to continue to work with the international civil engineering and construction firm, it provides the Council with continuity and robust performance monitoring.
Cllr Cecil Meiklejohn, Leader of Falkirk Council, said: "By agreeing to appoint Balfour Beatty, we will ensure a seamless transition from the early discussions with the firm to the construction phase. This continuity will allow us to capitalise on Balfour Beatty's extensive experience in delivering major roads infrastructure projects. With the expected economic benefits and improved sustainable transport choices, the project aligns perfectly with the Council's strategic priorities of fostering a thriving economy and facilitating a green transition. We are confident that this collaboration will result in positive outcomes for the community and help create a prosperous and sustainable future for the area."
