Consultation Launches On Major Multi-Storey Development In Aberdeen

Construction News Image
Aberdeen City Council has launched an extensive consultation exercise with tenants, owners and other stakeholders as part of the production of a full options appraisal of eight city centre multi-storey blocks.

The Council's Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee has agreed that this exercise should be carried out to ensure that views of all stakeholders on the economic, social and environmental impact of the blocks be considered prior to Outline Business Cases being brought back to Committee in the summer of 2024.

The future work will help ensure that investment in the current housing stock across the city is focussed on meeting future needs and brought up to the highest environmental standards.

The Committee previously agreed in January 2023 that the Housing Revenue Account's non-traditional housing stock was to be reviewed to identify any properties that will be unable to meet future environmental or other standards.

Councillors further noted that each multi-storey block in the city centre is of non-traditional construction and there will be a range of challenges in meeting future environmental and other standards. The Committee were assured that there will be no change to the current repair or maintenance regime whilst consultation is undertaken.

Convener Councillor Miranda Radley said: "The work in considering the best ways to invest in housing stock across the city will help to attract more people to live, work and raise a family in Aberdeen.

"It's crucial that all our properties are kept up to a high standard for those currently living there and to benefit future residents."

Vice Convener Councillor Ciaran McRae said: "We continue to work alongside tenants and owners to find new ways on how best to improve the overall living qualities in Aberdeen and the positive impacts that this will have on our local communities."
