Persimmon Homes has proposed a new housing development in Lesmahagow, which could deliver millions of pounds of investment in the local community and create more than 80 new jobs, if approved by South Lanarkshire Council.
The application from Persimmon Homes West Scotland would see 224 much-needed new homes built at Wellburn Farm, on land allocated for housing in South Lanarkshire Council's local development plan.
The proposals include a variety of high-quality new homes, ranging from two bedroom terraces to four bedroom detached houses. They have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the local housing market and incorporate a focus on energy efficiency and the path to net zero. The new homes will come with solar panels as well as electric car charging points to support new home owners to cut carbon and lower household bills.
New play parks and areas of open public space will be key features of the development. Other significant local benefits include funding for upgrades to McKirdy Park, a new roundabout and traffic calming measures on Strathaven Road and a landscaped entrance to the village.
It is estimated that the development would create around 40 local jobs each year in the construction sector, with a further 44 in services and other local firms.
Chris Logan, Persimmon West Scotland Managing Director, said: "Our proposed development in Lesmahagow will deliver much-needed, high quality new homes, create jobs and see a significant investment made in improving the local community.
"We're committed to helping local families onto the housing ladder – nearly half of our customers are first-time buyers and the average price of our homes is 16% below the average price of a new build in Scotland. We're also rated five-star by the Home Builders Federation – showing our commitment to delivering the highest standards for our customers.
"We've listened to the views of local residents and the application prioritises road safety and supporting the community's desire for improvements to McKirdy Park. If the application is approved, we'll continue working closely with local community to ensure this investment leaves a positive, lasting legacy in Lesmahagow."
