Argyll and Bute Council has announced that work to install a new water storage tank under Burnside Square in Campbeltown will begin on 5 January 2023.
The work forms part of the Council's Campbeltown Flood Protection Scheme – a £15million scheme that will see a variety of measures put in place to reduce the impact of flooding on residents and businesses in the town.
Contractors have already been busy installing new pipelines under many of the town's roads in recent months to increase the capacity of the drainage system so that it can cope better with heavy rainfall. Many of these pipes will lead into the new storage tank underneath Burnside Square. This tank will safely store water and allow it to slowly discharge.
The work in Burnside Square is due to take around six months, during which time temporary traffic management measures will be in place on Burnside Street and there will be parking restrictions on Burnside Street and within Burnside Square.
When the tank is installed, the square will be fully restored and will become a new, flexible public events space in response to the outcome of a public consultation over its future.
The Council's Policy Lead for Roads and Infrastructure Services, Councillor Andrew Kane, said: "Work is progressing well with the Campbeltown Flood Protection Scheme and, when fully complete, it will make a huge difference to the lives of local business and people living in areas of the town that are prone to flooding.
"We are aware that the installation of the underground tank in Burnside Square will cause some disruption, and for that we apologise, but the long-term benefits will be worth it. This project will help to protect Campbeltown's unique built heritage and will provide reassurance for many years to come."
