McLaughlin & Harvey have won three awards at the Considerate Constructors Scheme's Leading Lights Awards. The 2022 Awards ceremony was held last Thursday (24 November) at Manchester's Science and Industry Museum.

At the ceremony, McLaughlin & Harvey (McL&H) was presented with three awards, two for their work on Alexander Stadium and one for their University of Edinburgh King's Buildings Nucleus project.

The Awards recognise sites, organisations and individuals who have gone above and beyond the Code of Considerate Practice in the areas of Community, Environment and Workforce.

For their work on Alexander Stadium, McL&H were awarded in the National Environment Enhancement and Community Engagement categories.

During the construction of Alexander Stadium, McL&H partnered with their supply chain and employees, as well as local schools and the wider community to design and delivery a Construction Phase Biodiversity Strategy. The plan focused on improving the natural environment by promoting green spaces, and protecting and educating on the natural environment to drive behavioural change. We delivered environmentally focused community projects; sustainability workshops for young people; environmental training to employees; created a wildflower meadow; and organised litter picks.

McL&H said: "We contribute to healthy and resilient communities by building capacity amongst community organisations to enable community-led solutions to local challenges. The Alexander Stadium You Matter Communities Programme provided communities with financial, in-kind and volunteering support. Partnering with 53 local community organisations, the initiative focused on projects including environmental-based schemes that engaged with socially excluded people; sporting projects that increased access for marginalised groups; and mental health activities that addressed the negative impact of COVID-19.

"The judges commended the project delivery – 'Helping address local challenges and make a difference, McLaughlin & Harvey has left a positive lasting legacy on the community and environment.'

"Our King's Buildings Nucleus project was successful in the Local Sourcing category.

"We support local economies by buying goods and services locally and ethically. We build the capacity of SMEs and Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprises (VCSEs) by investing in their development.

"Our aim for the Nucleus project was to create a diverse supply chain by supporting opportunities for the local supply chain and helping new organisations to grow, supporting economic development and the resilience of SMEs and VCSEs. We developed a Strategic Procurement Plan with the aim of upskilling, improving bid competitiveness and building our local supply chain. The procurement team identified local SMEs and VCSEs to engage with, by buying goods and services locally and ethically. The project resulted in 85% local procurement, 85% SME procurement, 180% Social Enterprise procurement and 100% fair payment."

The judges commented on the success of the programme –

"McLaughlin & Harvey has demonstrated its commitment to investing in and developing the local supply chain during its work at The University of Edinburgh Kings Building Nucleus Project. The initiative has not only created opportunities to stimulate the local economy and create jobs, but it has also helped support individuals from marginalised and disadvantaged groups in society."

Group SHEQ Director, Alastair Lambe, said: "We're proud to have accepted these awards in front of our industry peers, showcasing the efforts of our team to go above and beyond on our projects. The wins reflect the added value McLaughlin & Harvey creates for society through our business operations to improve the environment, economy and social well-being. McLaughlin & Harvey is committed to improving the image of the industry by raising standards, building trust and ensuring that all our projects are working to the core values of the scheme."
