Following the success at the Brownfield Awards, I&H Brown's Winchburgh Auldcathie Remediation Project has won the Remediation for Community Benefit Award at the Scottish Civil Engineering awards hosted by CECA Scotland.
This award recognises not only technical ability but also the environmental improvement and social value the project brings to the community, which makes it particularly satisfying.
The creation of the Auldcathie District Park offered a clever solution to transform the land of a former landfill site, which had ceased operating in 2002 leaving an eyesore for the local community in Winchburgh.
Winchburgh Developments Ltd, through engagement with the local community, saw the opportunity to enhance the local area by not just undertaking the restoration works to the landfill but, as part of a wider development, to also transform the site into a local asset by creating a district park for the benefit of the local community.
Penny Lochhead, Community, Sport and Greenspace Manager for Winchburgh Developments, said: "We are delighted to see I & H Brown achieve this award. From the outset, they have gone above and beyond to involve the Winchburgh community and instil a sense of collective investment and pride in the transformation of this once derelict landfill into one of Scotland's largest new district parks.
"From recycling site materials to be used as 'messy play' to arranging site visits during construction so school pupils could see the play park they had drawn in class come to life. To providing college placements and sponsoring a graduate training place or helping move earth and cabins for the community growers in the park. Their on-site staff undertake all these regular activities with smiles on their faces and are well known in the community."
The success of the Auldcathie Remediation project is a product of collaborative working between Winchburgh Developments, designers Sweco and Optimised Environments, I & H Brown and of course the local community. It is fantastic to see it gain the positive recognition it deserves.
