BEAR Scotland Supports Brake's Road Safety Week

BEAR Scotland has announced its support for the road safety charity, Brake's Road Safety Week campaign.

Road Safety Week is the UK's biggest road safety event and this year its theme is Safe Roads For All. The theme emphasises that every life on our roads matters, and every death or injury is preventable – and informs the public about how they too can play a part in keeping the roads safe.

Throughout the week, BEAR Scotland will have been sharing stories of measures it has put in place to keep Scotland's busiest trunk roads safe across its North West and South East networks, as well as videos of its Trunk Road Incident Support Service (TRISS) teams, who attend to a variety of reports such as broken-down vehicles, collisions, debris on the road and much more.

In the last year, some of BEAR Scotland's road safety projects included:

• An innovative motorcycle safety campaign, using scientific research to improve riders' behaviour at bends.

• Improving safety and night visibility at the busy A9 Dunkeld junction.

• A package of measure to make the A9/B9161 junction at Munlochy safer.

• Over £2.2 million of roadside safety improvements on the A7 and A702.

• A new flood detection and warning system on the M9 near Bannockburn.

Iain Murray, BEAR Scotland's Managing Director, said: "Road safety is a top priority at BEAR Scotland. It's everyone's right to arrive home safely after travelling or working on Scotland's roads, and the projects we've delivered in the last year show our commitment to this. Through working with Transport Scotland, and engaging with the public to find out what concerns them, we have been able to deliver road safety improvements which will make a real difference to drivers', cyclists' and pedestrians' experiences.

"Our teams are a fundamental asset in keeping our busiest trunk roads safe and they also work closely with the emergency services, as well as our control rooms and therefore are always ready to react when a new report comes in.

"Providing a visible presence for road users in the event of a breakdown or collision allows the incident to be cleared safely whilst making sure the flow of traffic keeps moving."
