I & H Brown has been awarded a contract with BayWa r.e. UK to design and construct the Broken Cross Wind Farm.
The new 9-turbine windfarm is located on the former Broken Cross surface coal mine located off the M74 South of Lesmahagow. Works have just commenced and will run for a period of 65 weeks.
I & H Brown will be the principal contractor delivering the full balance of plant scope. Civils works include the upgrade of existing and construction of new site roads, construction of the Broken Cross substation control building, wind turbine foundations, excavation and refilling of cable trenching, track drainage and reinstatement of areas where needed. We are also responsible for building platforms to accommodate the SPEN substation compound and construction compound.
Electrical works will include HV and FO site cabling, installation of substation equipment including switchgear, placing and terminating of all wind farm cables, and commissioning the wind farm electrical works.
Due to the historical mining activity on the site, ground conditions represent a key challenge on the site. Wind turbine foundations have been designed by Wardell Armstrong who have a history of working on the site on behalf of the client and therefore are a great design partner for the project.
I & H Brown said: "The project is a brilliant example of transforming a brownfield site associated with fossil fuels into an asset which will generate renewable energy!"
