SGN has hosted SNP MP for Glenrothes and Central Fife, Peter Grant, at their site in Windygates to see first hand their ongoing works to improve the regions biodiversity.
Scottish Gas Network have selected 142 sites across their networks in Scotland and the south of England for ecosystem improvements. Their former gasholder site in Windygates, central Fife, is the first to be developed, with work starting shortly on a nature walk and wildlife meadow. They are also providing funding to local primary schools for projects such as building bird and bat boxes, to encouraging wildlife to flourish.
Stakeholder and Community Manager Margaret Hamilton met with Peter at Windygates last week to discuss our plans. Margaret said: "We're delighted to be improving biodiversity at our Windygates site. We're working closely with the Kennoway Men's Shed, and both Kennoway and Balcurvie Primary schools, to help wildlife thrive, including making bug hotels which will help attract different species of insects."
Mr Grant said: "I've always had an interest in nature and wildlife so am excited to hear about SGN's investment in the Windygates site and with local community groups. Work on the site is still in the early stages but I'm looking forward to visiting once it is more developed – I might even need my wellies and binoculars!
"Between the biodiversity improvements and the H100 Fife project, the world-first hydrogen network in Buckhaven and Methil that will bring renewable hydrogen into 300 homes over the next two years, it's great to see SGN investing in Fife in such a significant way."
One of the five pillars in SGN's Environment Strategy is to boost biodiversity to create more healthy green areas on our land, helping to improve air quality in our communities.
