The City of Edinburgh Council has announced planned maintenance and repair works to the Central Library in the city.

The works, part of a major £1.8m building works investment programme, will see the library close from Monday 25 April, re-opening on Wednesday 11 May.

Since January, scaffolding has been put up around the building to allow our contractors to repair parts of our roof, windows, and replace any stonework which is in poor condition.

Work inside the building includes upgrades to our electrical system, lighting, and fire safety equipment.


Additionally, the Reference Library will be closed from 11 April to 17 June 2022 so that the lighting can be replaced.

Culture and Communities Convener Cllr Donald Wilson said: "These planned works are part of our major £1.8m investment programme for essential repairs to the roof, windows and stonework. The temporary closure of the library will ensure this much-loved and iconic building, which has served the Capital since 1890, will continue to be used and enjoyed by our citizens for another 130 years."
