Gowkthrapple Regeneration Masterplan Approved

Construction News Image
North Lanarkshire Council has approved, in principle, a regeneration Masterplan for Gowkthrapple.

The Masterplan outlines significant re-development of the area, delivering new housing, landscaped open space and green corridors.

The proposal could see the development of around 300 new homes over four phases. This aims to regenerate the community by building new homes, retail, additional open space and play facilities and improved transport infrastructure to create a new, attractive and well-connected neighbourhood.

Around 100 of these properties, as part of phase one, would be new build council homes for rent and take us towards our ambitious target of delivering 5,000 new homes by 2035. These proposed new council homes for this site would replace the ageing flats within the area earmarked for demolition as part of our re-provisioning programme and see modern homes built for the varying needs of the local community.

Convener of Housing and Regeneration, Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey said: "Providing new, modern, energy efficient homes for Gowkthrapple, is just one aspect of the area's Masterplan, which was designed in consultation with the local community. I'm delighted that planning, in principle, has been recommended for this site and we will continue to progress the various elements of the plan to transform the area.

"We're already making significant progress with our investment and developments across North Lanarkshire, supporting economic growth, regenerating communities and improving the lives of our tenants and residents."

As part of the roll out of the Masterplan, work will continue with other private developers and Garrion People's Housing Co-operative to progress future housing opportunities.

Planning permission, in principle, is approved, subject to conditions. Subsequent applications are required to assess the details of the specific elements of the proposals per phase.
