The development of the former Bell Street Studios has won a fifth major accolade after having secured the prestigious Saltire Society Housing & Design Multiple Dwelling Award as well as the Saltire Medal yesterday evening.
Designed by Collective Architecture and led by CCG on behalf of GHA and Lowther, members of the Wheatley Group, the project was completed in 2019 and comprised the conversion of former stables that belonged to Glasgow City Council's Cleansing Dept in the late 19th century. After extensive upgrade and conservation, a total of 52 one and two-bedroom apartments were conceived within an envelope that is unique in the city of Glasgow.
The Saltire Awards, which celebrate the diversity of the best in new housing in Scotland, are supported by the Scottish Government and "recognise the contribution housing makes to social and cultural conversations."
Sarah Mason, Director of the Saltire Society, said: "Congratulations to all our 2021 recipients. To the architects, planners, contractors, clients and teams that continue to show innovation, quality and attention to detail are present in the creation of Scotland's architectural landscape.
"Established by the Society in 1937, the awards advocate the importance of good housing for all and continue to this day to promote good design and quality housing as well as honour and encourage creativity, excellence and innovation in modern Scottish placemaking. This year may not have been the year we had been planning for, but we are encouraged to see the amazing work that is taking place in difficult circumstances and are very grateful for the time and effort put in by all who take part in not only these Awards but in creating a better Scotland."
