Support Schemes Available For Communities Recovering From Storm Arwen

Construction News Image
The government has announced a number of support schemes to help communities recover from the impact of Storm Arwen.

The Scottish Government's Resilience Room (SGORR) met again on Monday afternoon, chaired by the Deputy First Minister John Swinney, to oversee efforts to restore power to communities, reconnect water supplies and re-establish telecommunications services. In the last twenty-four hours, significant recovery work has taken place with the power supply now re-connected to over 95,000 homes.

Local authorities and power companies have established rest centres and welfare support services, where appropriate in affected local areas, while some people continue to experience a loss of power and water.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney urged anyone who is need of support to contact their local council to be put in touch with support services.

Mr Swinney said: "After meeting with power companies today, it is good to see that some progress is being made across the country as power is restored.

"While we are hopeful for a further recovery as soon as possible, the scale and complexity of the situation cannot be underestimated. Many people are still without power and water, and that’s why local authorities and partners are stepping up welfare support in affected areas for those who need it. I would like to reassure anyone who has been affected by outages and shortages that help is available - please do not hesitate to get in touch with your local council to be directed to the relevant support in your area.

"We will continue to monitor progress closely, ensuring every possible resource is deployed and provide updates as the situation develops. In the meantime I would like to express my gratitude to all those who continue to provide vital support to local communities."
