Programme Of Work To Be Carried Out At Herdmanflat Hospital Site

Construction News Image
East Lothian Council has announced that a programme of work will be carried out at the former Herdmanflat Hospital site in Haddington between November 2021 and June 2022.

The work will include increased security measures, ground maintenance and demolition of non-listed buildings which is being carried out to ensure the site is safe. The works do not represent the start of new build construction or site redevelopment.

For health and safety reasons it will be necessary to restrict public access to those areas affected while the works are in progress.

East Lothian Council purchased the former Herdmanflat Hospital from NHS Lothian in March 2020. It is the council's intention to retain the listed buildings and develop the site mainly for older people's housing, a requirement which has been identified as a priority need across East Lothian.

A feasibility study to determine potential options for the ultimate use of a redeveloped Herdmanflat site has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, however the council remains committed to carrying out a full engagement and consultation with the local community ahead of any future planning applications being submitted for any proposals.

Councillor Jim Goodfellow, the council's spokesperson for Housing, said: "The council has invested in measures to keep the site safe but, despite this, there have been some instances of vandalism. As public safety is paramount, it is now necessary to invest in further security measures to ensure the safety of the general public and integrity of the listed buildings. I would seek to reassure local people that this is not the start of the redevelopment of the site, as we plan to carry out full local consultation on options as soon as we can.

"Consultation with Historic Environment Scotland and with other council departments including Roads and Planning took place before the programme and extent of the works was agreed."
