North Lanarkshire Council has held a sod cutting ceremony to mark the start of a new council housing development in Airdrie.
Work is now underway to build 31 new, affordable homes for rent in Northburn Avenue, Airdrie. The new homes are a mix of 1-3 bedrooms, including 3 suitable for wheelchair users, and are being built on the site of 28 flats which were recently demolished as part of our re-provisioning programme.
This latest project to get underway forms part of our council house plans to deliver 5,000 new homes by 2035. We've already making progress with 833 homes complete, 339 under construction and a further 125 due to get underway this coming year.
Cutting the sod was Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, Convener of Housing and Regeneration, who was joined by local members, Councillors Sophia Coyle, Alan Beveridge and Tommy Morgan; council officers and representatives from developer, Hadden Group.
Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, said: "I'm sure local residents are pleased to see our new homes planned for their area. This site forms part of our phased approach to demolish existing tower blocks and build new accessible homes that meet the needs and aspirations of our tenants. It's great to see the real progress we're making in driving forward our regeneration plans to benefit local communities and their economies.
"All of our new homes are designed and built to the highest standards with energy efficiency measures to help our tenants save money on running costs while protecting the environment and they all meet Housing for Varying Needs, which means homes are more accessible to adapt to tenants' mobility needs. They are built for the future and will last for generations to come – all part of our long term vision to make North Lanarkshire the place to live."
The £5.8m development is being delivered by Hadden Group, with a contribution of £1.829m made by the Scottish Government.
Stephen Lynas, Business Development Director at Hadden Group commented: "Working in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council we're pleased to see our third project on site now as part of the council house building programme with more sites in the development pipeline. These high quality houses will provide great homes for the local community for many years to come."
