SSEN Due To Start £1.1m Upgrade Works

Construction News Image
A £1.1 million upgrade project by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to boost the resilience of the power supply to a North West Hampshire village and the surrounding area will get under way next month.

Starting on 5 July 2021, the programme of works to future-proof the network for homes and businesses in the village of Thruxton will see SSEN replace two transformers, located at the end of St John's Lane, with modern, more efficient equipment which also reduces any potential noise pollution.

As part of the seven-month long improvement project, the distribution operator will also dismantle the two brick enclosures, which had been designed to accommodate the older kit. The existing footprint of these enclosures will then provide the space for the new transformers, eliminating the need to construct in another area of the village.

This significant investment in the latest technology will ensure the strength of Thruxton's power network, keeping power flowing to those living and working in the area and helping them meet their net zero goals with an infrastructure fit for the future.

SSEN's Project Manager for Thruxton's upgrade works, David Oliver said: "I'm pleased to announce this significant investment for the local area, providing a robust network for those who live and work here; suiting their needs now and in the future as they look to adopt low carbon technologies, such as electric vehicles.

"While this considerable programme of works to replace existing equipment with modern and more efficient kit will provide a substantial boost to the network, the impact of this upgrade will be minimal as the work will take place on an existing SSEN site.

"For the duration of these works, SSEN will look to update customers in the immediate vicinity of the works, and I would like to assure them that we will be carrying out the upgrade with no disruption to the power supply of our customers."

SSEN's investment in this Hampshire village provides a power supply that suits the needs of residents now and in to the future by upgrading the local network to help local communities achieve their decarbonisation ambitions; so as more customers turn to low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles, they have a supply and infrastructure that's fit for purpose. is undertaking these works in adherence with the Government's coronavirus guidelines. These include strict hygiene measures, enhanced Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and thorough safety checks in advance of any work to ensure the safety of both colleagues and customers.
