Granada Secondary Glazing has opened a dedicated operation in Scotland to serve rising demand for specific secondary glazing solutions in all types of buildings North of the Border.
As specialists in insulating the UK's listed and conservation-controlled building stock, Granada has already completed a number of projects in Scotland, bringing both older and newer buildings up to date from a thermal and acoustic performance perspective. It has also worked with Historic Environment Scotland on projects ranging from hotels, offices and commercial buildings to ancient castles.
With their Edinburgh office opened in April 2021, Mike Latham from Commercial Sales at Granada Secondary Glazing explains how the region's architects and specifiers will be offered their full turn key solution delivered by a local team based in the capital city.
"Having spoken to a number of clients and potential clients in Scotland, they really welcome the fact that we can now offer our market-leading secondary glazing products and services from a Scottish-based location," says Mike.
Full secondary glazing service for Scotland
Edinburgh-based Senior Project Manager David Glasgow heads up a team comprising a surveyor, project manager and two installation teams who provide a full secondary glazing surveying, design and installation service across Scotland.
"David is our ‘Mr Scotland' who brings a wealth of experience to serving the Scottish market," continues Mike. "Our facility has the full weight and support of our South Yorkshire HQ behind it, with the design, project management and installation process all being handled locally by Scots."
A key element in Granada's secondary glazing services for the Scottish market is ready access to window refurbishment for timber sash and case windows, predominantly installed in Scotland's listed and historic buildings.
"Much of our work in Scotland involves heritage properties which have old timber sash and case windows that are retained. So, inevitably they need fully refurbishing before the secondary glazing is fitted in front of them," explains Mike.
"David's extensive experience gives him unfettered access into refurbishment services for both the sash and case windows and steel Crittall windows. This valuable extra service will, I am sure, be appreciated by our clients in Scotland who can access the whole Granada secondary glazing package."
Secondary glazing is the proven cost-effective, efficient and discreet solution to cure issues with external noise, thermal efficiency and enhance security in buildings of all ages. Correctly installed secondary glazing can make buildings 80% quieter by reducing noise levels up to 54dB.
Secondary glazing: preferred option for heritage and listed buildings
Where single glazed primary windows are retained - especially in heritage and listed buildings for aesthetic or planning requirements - secondary glazing is frequently the preferred option to create a warmer, quieter and more secure environment. Slimline aluminium frames are virtually invisible, maintaining a building's charm and character while bringing the glazing system up to modern-day performance standards.
The unique capability of quality secondary glazing to solve specific issues – be they acoustic, thermal or security – with a discreet, yet practical and user-friendly solution – enables the retention of original glazing and a property's essential character. Addressing thermal issues by improving insulation and reducing heat loss helps to lower energy bills and a building's carbon footprint.
Extra insulation provided by secondary glazing can eliminate draughts and heat loss by up to 65%, while the robust aluminium frames securely fixed internally enhance security by deterring unwanted intrusion.
Edinburgh hotel guests sleep peacefully thanks to Granada Glazing
Secondary glazing designed and installed by Granada Glazing at the Eden Locke Hotel, a design-led aparthotel on George Street in the heart of Edinburgh, means guests can enjoy a quiet and comfortable stay.
The Victorian building is also Category B listed by Historic Environment Scotland, marking it as of special architectural or historic interest.
Granada's secondary glazing was specified to reduce traffic noise intrusion, a critical insulation requirement to minimise noise complaints. High performing 10.8mm acoustic glass was used to reflect, and block low-frequency noise often emitted by vehicles.
When installed with a tightly sealed frame, correctly specified acoustic glazing will greatly reduce the volume from external sources, eliminating it completely or reducing it to a whisper.
Heritage 2-pane horizontal sliders were powder coated in RAL 7012 (Basalt Grey) satin finish and RAL 9910 (Brilliant White) matt finish to suit the surrounding décor with 50 windows across 27 rooms treated.
Granada's close liaison with managers and blocking a small number of rooms per day to a pre-agreed schedule ensured the hotel could maintain occupancy levels during installations.
Granada Glazing partners with architects and specifiers on the design, manufacture and supply of high quality commercial secondary glazing for all sectors and building types across the UK.
