Woodland Walkway Development To Reduce Local Flood Risk

Construction News Image
Glasgow City Council have developed an attractive woodland walkway that will reduce local flood risk and enhance community greenspace in the south-east of the city.

A key Glasgow City Region City Deal project, the recently completed walkway on the former Kings Park golf course site was formed through a programme of tree planting and the construction of new path networks that link Croftpark Avenue with Croftside Avenue, offering an attractive active travel route for locals and visitors.

As well as making greenspace improvements, contractor RJ McLeod and project supervisor/design consultant AECOM have also introduced sustainable drainage features to free up capacity in the sewer network in the Kings Park and Croftfoot areas.

Work delivered on this City Deal project includes interventions within the former Kings Park golf course to capture and re-direct surface water run-off into a new basin, using ditches and sections of the Spittal Burn that now flow on the surface. Excess rainwater can now be slowly released from the basin into an area of the burn which flows within a culvert beneath Croftpark Avenue.

Project contractors have also worked closely with Croftfoot Primary School to construct an outdoor amphitheatre (as shown below) that combines outdoor learning space with an emergency storm water storage facility. A brand new MUGA pitch was also built for the school, as well as the installation of new surface water drainage features.

Work in this part of the city has made significant progress, with contractors expecting to be off-site by the end of the year.
