Dundee City Council has announced its Local Housing Strategy (LHS) for 2019-2024, setting out provision for housing and services to address homelessness, housing & support needs, and fuel poverty.
The strategy has been developed with Dundee's Health & Social Care Partnership, the Scottish Government, partner organisations and the wider public.
A Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) will also highlight the affordable housing priorities within Dundee. The Scottish Government Affordable Housing Investment Programme has contributed almost £70.5 million to the city from 2016/17 to 2021.
In the period from 2016 to September 2019 there has been a total of 393 new build social rented units completed in Dundee. Dundee City Council and partners are on target to provide 1,000 new affordable homes by 2021.
Anne Rendall, Convener of Dundee City Council's neighbourhood services committee said: "Work is about to be or currently being carried out on 406 new affordable homes in Dundee to add to those already completed by the Council and its partners.
"Affordable homes will be springing up at thirteen sites, including Ellengowan Drive, South Victoria Dock Road, Derby Street and Charleston Primary School. This will give us more houses fit for the 21st century that people want to live in.
"In the strategy we are also ensuring that efforts are made to enhance energy efficiency levels. We are embracing insulation, solar energy, wind power and other measures to reduce carbon emissions, fuel poverty and help tenants to live in warm, affordable homes."
The Council and partners continue to make progress in delivering high quality, energy efficient housing in the City.
The previous Local Housing Strategy saw significant progress made by regenerating Whitfield, Hilltown, Lochee and Mill O Mains. These areas have seen transformational changes in affordable housing in recent years.
Cllr Rendall added: "Our regeneration programme has already removed some of the poor quality, unpopular house types, to make way for new homes that meet people's needs and aspirations in the 21st century. By doing that we are also tackling the problem of supply and demand."
The Council has recently completed new build council housing at Alexander Street. Additionally, 82 Council and Fleming Trust houses at Derby Street are currently in development.
The plan ensures Dundee City Council & partners build properties meeting or surpassing the current building regulations.
Councillors will consider the Local Housing Strategy and Strategic Housing Investment Plan at Neighbourhood Services Committee on Monday (30 September).
