SSE has been shortlisted for a Finance for the Future Award, in recognition of its work in climate leadership and embedding sustainability into its overarching businesses objectives.
SSE is in the running for the prestigious award following its decision to align four business targets to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and commit to achieving them by 2030.
The goals are inseparably linked with SSE's business strategy and financial objectives, and are core to its vision of being a leading energy provider in a low-carbon world.
The awards are decided by the Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales, the prestigious Prince's Accounting for Sustainability Project (A4S) and accounting firm Deloitte.
Helen Slinger, Executive Director, A4S, said: "Embedding social and environmental considerations into key financial decisions can improve performance. The finalists of these Awards demonstrate why all finance leaders should be considering broader factors; for the future of the planet, society and their organisations."
Gregor Alexander, SSE Finance Director, said: "We've put the transformation to a low carbon economy at the heart of our strategy, demonstrating how seriously we take decarbonisation.
"Four ambitious goals for the future underpin what our businesses stand for and our investment in long-term, sustainable, low-carbon assets and infrastructure will contribute to the UK and Ireland's climate change targets while building a fairer and more prosperous society.
"We're delighted this strategy has been recognised with this nomination and send congratulations to all those nominated alongside us for taking the bold decisions that will create sustainable businesses and a more sustainable world."
The Finance for the Future Awards ceremony will take place on 10 October 2019.
