Alistair Phillips-Davies, SSE Chief Executive, has today written for The Sun newspaper on how SSE can help in the fight against climate change.

Following the Committee on Climate Change report in April, SSE has this week written to the Government to outline how it is building its business to drive forward the low carbon economy.

In a column in the newspaper published today he writes:

"Climate change is the greatest challenge of our generation.


"That's why today we have written to the Government to say that net zero emissions can be achieved by 2050, but only if we electrify our economy.

"But we can't rely on the Government to lead this energy revolution alone. Companies like ours have to drive it forward too.

"Our efforts centre on offshore wind, onshore wind and solar power.

"Nuclear also has a role but capturing and storing underground carbon emissions from power stations has more long-term potential, as do batteries. Both need urgent development.

"With renewables and new clean technologies working together, we will be able to create a zero carbon electricity backbone for our economy.

"Now we need the Government and the rest of the industry to step up to the plate, and support a net zero target by 2050. And then deliver it."
