Road Improvement Programme Gets Green Light

Construction News Image
Road and transport works totalling £10.6 million have been approved for Aberdeen.

The 2019/20 programme includes the resurfacing of carriageways and footways, refurbishing crossings, lighting improvements, pothole repairs, flooding and coastal protection measures, and support for cycling and walking.

Aberdeen City Council's City Growth and Resources Committee approved list of schemes drawn up by officers following road and infrastructure surveys.

The programme will be funded through approved capital budgets together with linkages to community action plans.

Committee convener Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: "The programme is line with our transportation strategy to improve safety for all road users.

"Communities across the city will benefit from this investment – in the city centre, at the Beach, and in dozens of residential streets.

"Despite budget pressures we're maintaining and upgrading our infrastructure. Last year we committed an extra £10m to roads maintenance over four years and we're using £2.5m from that to boost our spend in 2019/20."

An estimated £1,000,000 will be used to replace obsolete lighting columns and a further £1,500,000 to change existing lanterns to cheaper, low-energy LED lighting.

The programme includes £400,000 to continue upgrading of traffic light systems, which will reduce delays caused by breakages and sourcing outdated parts.

And £50,000 will be used for the continuation of Dyce Drive cycle/pedestrian route.

A provisional reserve programme for 2020/21 was also approved and will allow substitution of schemes should it not be possible to implement any of this year's schemes.
