Morrison Construction's Project Manager David Wright has said that he still feels a little "overwhelmed" after winning a silver medal in front of a crowd of more than 400 at the Construction Manager of the Year Awards (CMYA) in London last week.

Shortlisted in the Primary Education category, David was one of nine silver medallists out of the 63 finalists at the awards, run by the Chartered Institute of Building.

The silver medal acknowledges David's achievements during his first job as Project Manager on the £12.4m Whatriggs Primary School and Early Learning Centre for East Ayrshire Council.

The Whatriggs project combined two primary schools into one modern campus, which pupils, teachers and staff moved into during August 2017.


Working with East Ayrshire Council, David and his team advocated for modern project design, boosting the natural light and ventilation of the education facility while outside creating more natural landscape to maximise play areas.

Reflecting on winning his CMYA silver medal, David said: "I know it is an individual award but I was supported by the whole team. You can't do something like this by yourself, so everyone played their part to deliver a very professional project.

"I was determined to prove myself on my first project for East Ayrshire Council and I believe you should always go over and above to get the best result for the client."

David is now the Project Manager for the £68m Barony Campus in Cumnock, also for East Ayrshire Council, with the same team that delivered the Whatriggs Primary School and Early Learning Centre.

Scheduled for completion in summer 2020, Barony Campus will be the largest education facility of its kind in Scotland, surpassing the size of the £44m Largs Campus delivered by Morrison Construction with Hub South West and North Ayrshire Council in March.
