Aberdeen has been chosen to host the prestigious World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) AGM in 2019.

WECP President Mayor Mike Savage of the City of Halifax (Canada) made the announcement, following a unanimous and enthusiastic vote by the Board members, on the final day of this year's AGM in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Established in 1995, the WECP is a non-profit organisation whose member cities are globally recognised as international energy capitals.

The WECP serves to facilitate business-to-business interaction, partnerships in energy-related activities, and the sharing of industry knowledge, contacts, and experiences, while providing a worldwide network of industry support services and resources.

Its trade missions enable local businesses to travel to member cities and capitalise on business development opportunities.

Mayor of the City of Halifax and President of WECP Mike Savage said: "I'm delighted that we're bringing the World Energy Cities Partnership AGM to Aberdeen next year. We've heard about the great things happening in the city in 2019 and all of the partner city Mayors are excited to be part of it. The city put a strong bid together and I was very happy, as President of the partnership, to offer the Lord Provost my full support."

Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett, Vice President of the WECP, added: "Today's announcement is fantastic news for the City of Aberdeen. This will promote Aberdeen as a global stage a business centre with globally-competitive industries not only in energy and renewables, but food and drink, research and education and a diverse cultural offering.

"It will without doubt lead to further collaboration between Aberdeen and other member cities and I would encourage industry, the academic sector, civic and third sector leaders to get involved to maximise the long-term benefits of being part of WECP has to offer."

The World Energy Cities are: Aberdeen, Scotland, UK; Atyrau, Kazakhstan; Barranquilla, Colombia; Calgary, Canada; Cape Town, South Africa; Dammam, Saudi Arabia; Daqing, China; Doha, Qatar; Dongying, China; Esbjerg, Denmark; Halifax, Canada; Houston, USA; Karamay, China; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Luanda, Angola; Perth, Australia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; St John's, Canada; Stavanger, Norway; Villahermosa, Mexico.
