Three potential new sites have been identified for the construction of a new prison to replace HMP Barlinnie.
According to reports, the Scottish Prison Service has been working to identify sites for a £100 million replacement prison. It is understood that HMP Barlinnie will close and the new facility will be twice the size.
Reports suggest that three sites, two within the city limits of Glasgow and one on the outskirts, have now been identified and the Prison Service will send them forward to the Scottish Government for consideration.
It is understood that when HMP Barlinnie is closed the site could be redeveloped for social housing.
The Government is said to be including the prison construction in their budget considerations for 2019/20.
