Residents in North Lanarkshire are being urged to stay vigilant following reports of cold callers operating in the area.
The council said a number of cases have recently been reported, including addresses in the Kirkshaws area of Coatbridge and Cambusnethan, Wishaw, where roofing companies are calling at householders doors claiming to be able to access grant funding from the council to help replace roofs.
In at least one case, a significant amount of money was handed over for work which did not comply with the necessary building regulation and was not eligible for grant aid from the council.
Cllr Michael McPake said: "We would strongly advise people not to open the door to cold calling traders. It's all too easy for householders to be scammed out of money by doorstep criminals. Don't let anyone do work on your home unless you're sure they're reputable and are going to be carrying out the works according to the required standards.
"We would also ask people to keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours and relatives who could fall prey to these conmen."
The council's community safety and trading standards team have provided the following advice;
• Don't let cold callers do any work on your home
• If you think you may need some work done, get three written quotes from reputable firms
• Do not be pressurised into handing over any money or paying money into company bank accounts
• Do not make any large payments upfront
• Check with the council's Private Sector team on 01698 274179 to see if any works suggested to you might be grant eligible, before signing anything
