Work has started on a new 'affordable' housing development in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire.
CCG has started delivering 30 high-quality amenity flats on the site of the former East Milton primary school in the Westwood area. Completion is scheduled for winter this year.
Designed by Scott Mullan Associates, the scheme will comprise one-and two-bedroom amenity flats spread over five three-storey blocks. The project will include an enhanced level of insulation specification for each flat, as well as solar panels, modern heating systems and boilers.
To specifically meet the needs of older people, the properties will have lift access, large entrance halls and extensive gardens with designated seating areas, while disabled spaces will be included among the parking facilities.
Speaking after the sod-cutting ceremony, Cllr Josh Wilson said: "I am delighted to officially start construction work on this latest development.
"Improving the quality and range of housing suitable for meeting a wider range of needs is a key strand of South Lanarkshire Council's Local Housing Strategy and the council's Home+ new-build programme provides an important opportunity to purpose-build accessible homes to meet the needs of older residents and people with particular needs.
"These flats are specifically designed to be suitable for older people and, with East Kilbride having both a housing shortage and an ageing population, this is clearly something that is greatly needed in the town.
"Built to the latest standards of accessibility these spacious amenity flats incorporate a range of design features that will enable older people to live independently in their own homes for longer."
CCG's Financial Director, Bernie Rooney, said: "The new homes will be constructed using a timber-frame system that is manufactured off-site in our bespoke manufacturing facility, CCG OSM, in Cambuslang. This form of construction ensures quality with greater accuracy and consistency compared with traditional construction methods. It gives enhanced thermal performance thanks to better air tightness and, when on-site, a faster speed of build."
