North Lanarkshire Council has started work to upgrade security at a car park in Airdrie.
In partnership with Town Centre Activities Ltd, new features are being installed at Hallcraig Street car park which include a controlled access system with retractable bollards to close the car park overnight, improved LED lighting, and upgraded CCTV cameras.
As excavation works are required to install the bollards, vehicles parking on the lower level of the facility will need to enter the car park via the upper level entrance. Diversions will be in place. During the works, the lower level car park will be closed from 7pm – 7am. Completion is scheduled for Thursday, 08 March.
Cllr Michael McPake said: "To tackle issues of vandalism and antisocial behaviour in the car park at night, the council has been working with Police Scotland to identify ways of improving security.
"We will install two extra high definition CCTV cameras on the upper level, and upgrade the existing seven cameras on the ground level to high definition. Combined with brighter lighting, this will improve the coverage and quality of images from the CCTV system.
"Visitors to the town centre will still be able to park on the ground level in the evenings using the Upper Mill Street entrance but the rest of the car park, which is not used regularly at night, will be closed between 7.00pm and 5.00am to prevent antisocial behaviour. The public stairwell will also be closed at night."
When the work is complete, the automatic bollards will allow parked vehicle to leave the car park at any time.
